(...) The blue box went to the curb one night last week. About 7 p.m., a minivan
pulled up with the big side-door open and a young man proceeded to leap out,
radio blaring. Without breaking his conversation with the driver, he grabbed
every pop can in the bin and fired them into the vehicle. Off they went to the
next driveway. A little while later, a pickup truck came by pulling a big,
honking trailer full of scrap metal goods, including an old barbecue. He took
