European water chestnut grows so thick on the surface of lakes and rivers that it cuts off the light beneath and, for good measure, sucks up the water’s oxygen. And now it’s here. The invasive weed was found by Ducks Unlimited in the Rideau River upstream from Black’s Rapids last summer, the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority says. The authority sent volunteers to rip it out but suspects seeds might have survived. via Invasive water chestnut found in Rideau | Ottawa Citizen.
