An Ottawa man says he complained to the National Capital Commission more than 25
years ago about the dangers of the Rideau Canal bicycle path in the same area as
where a cyclist slid and tumbled into the canal last week. Barry Robinson says
he wrote to the NCC in July of 1989 after his seven-year-old daughter was
distracted on her bicycle while riding on the canal-side path on Colonel By
Drive near the Heron Road Bridge, hit the less-than-one-foot-tall concrete curb
at the side of path and tumbled about eight feet into the waters of the canal.
