Voters in Somerset ward are faced with such an embarrassment of riches that it’s
hard not to wish a few of the candidates here were running elsewhere so more
than one might end up on city council. Diane Holmes has had such a firm grip on
the ward, not to mention the array of complex issues it faces, that past
challengers were no match. Her share of the vote in the past three elections
never dipped below 60 per cent, making her the likely front-runner this year
until April, when she announced her retirement, clearing the way for someone
