By Steph Willems, Ottawa Community News, July 17, 2014 There's no shortage of
debate surrounding oil extraction and pipelines in Canada - a debate that made
its way to Westboro on July 3. Environmental activist group Ecology Ottawa
hosted a meeting at Kitchissippi United Church to discuss TransCanada's proposed
Energy East pipeline, which would carry diluted bitumen from the oil sands in
northern Alberta to a refinery in Saint John, N.B. The bulk of the route would
see the conversion of an existing natural gas pipeline to carry the oil, with
approximately 1,400 kilometres of new pipeline constructed mostly in Quebec and
New Brunswick.
