For decades, technicians at the Arnprior military base-turned-factory relied on
a solvent called trichloroethylene — TCE, for short — to clean grease from
aircraft parts. Only after the 1980s, when the compound was found to cause
cancer, did the aviation industry and other TCE users begin seeking safer
